Heraklion has faced many challenges over the years in its attempts to improve transport infrastructure, the condition of its roads and the sheer volume of cars which make life in the city difficult for drivers and pedestrians. The Municipality has instigated several programmes of redevelopment for the city centre and the historic Old Town, integrating traffic management into an overall policy to produce a cleaner, more attractive city for future generations.

Departments are responsible for delivering a wide range of services provided by the Municipality of Heraklion such us Housing, Cleansing, Planning and Social Services. In addition several of the City of Heraklion's departments; Museums, Culture and Education for example, reflect a diverse range of other responsibilities. In order to effectively deliver its services the Municipality of Heraklion employs about 1200 workers. Depending on the staffing needs of each department, it employs both permanent and temporary staff in various capacities.
